A few months ago Sony filed a patent application to allow their systems to stop play and show you adverts. In the middle of playing. By stopping it. It’s an application, so hopefully it won’t be granted and even if it is it doesn’t mean that they’ll ever use it. They won’t. Ever.

Right? I mean, I’ll drink Mtn Dew until the cows come home, but stop my run on Tony Hawk HD to show me an advert for that fizzy green toxic juice and I’ll be throwing my console through the nearest window.

It talks about slowing down the game, showing a flashing light, pausing it and then running the advert before rewinding the game back a bit and then kicking off again. It’s like all my nightmares in one application.

I really hope this doesn't happen, it can't happen... Only way I'd approve this is if games become cheaper because of the money from sponsors and integrated into loading screens.

Whats everyone's thoughts on this?

I wouldn't mind it if they did what Wipeout HD did. That game integrated a 30 second car commercial into some loading screens.

Loading screens, okay. Placed throughout a game's enviorment okay...assuming I'm not playing a game like Skyrim. A Pepsi billboard seems out of place in Whiterun. But don't interrupt gameplay!

LOL Imagine getting into a firefight in SOCOM or Battlefield and suddenly an ad pops up out of nowhere... How awful...

I really hate this idea. I paid to play that game, not for ads. Don't interrupt my games!!

There's no concrete details yet, apart from a patent. Keep in mind there were some concerns about MS doing it as well. But I doubt it'll go ahead, because there would be a massive outcry in a similar vein to the controversial endings of Mass Effect 3.

There was a "service" (im not sure what to call it) that had in game ads. Not videos or anything, but i remember in far cry 2, there was billboards for the latest movies. I Like that but actual in game ads where they show you a video, i dont like

OMG if they interrupt games with ADs then i will follow @Thomas "I’ll be throwing my console through the nearest window."

Its a BAD idea and its just presents how much greedy bastards are trying to ruin one of the best entertainment ever... i fear that gaming will be ruined if more money greed vultures try to grab their part out of it...

i guess it will be like this : 50 USD game + 20 USD to not see ADs like in android market except there if a game has adverts its FREE.

on loading screens okay but in gameplay? i mean every phone game with ads are free. if you pay they should be gone! is this on all ps consoles??

Doesn't make sense. Games that have ads are Lite versions/demos, why put ads in something we payed for?

I wouldn't mind in loading screens, but gameplay... Ehhh.... If that happens I turn green and big, and going around saying "Hulk Smash!!"

Are you on about VidZone music service? The old UI of that application had advertisements in bottom and top corners, not sure about the new UI not been on it in a long time. They also had short video adverts between so many songs played, but this is fine seeing as it's a free service and they need money to run it.

BF2142 had billboards with movie ads as well.

I seriously think this is a dumb idea. Unless they put it in games that indie developers make and sell for cheap, then Im okay with that. But in a full retail game, I dont think so.

The only Full retail games that would be acceptable to have ads in would be sports games. Super bowl commercials in the NFL games would be a nice touch, no?

Yeah, I could understand having them sports games or maybe racing like Gran Turismo, itd make it feel... authentic. But just not where it wouldnt make sense.

i could see GTA having ads on billboards, through radios and tvs, and what not. but having like pop up ads would be ridiculous! but i wouldnt be surprised if that happened, everything is about the money now...
