This happened with my 3001. What happens is that the rubber wears away and is torn apart. The only real options are;
A. Send it to Sony B. Take it apart yourself and try to replace the rubber (Not sure if that's possible) C. Send it to someone that knows how to repair it. D. Buy a new PSP Believe or not, the 1001s have the better hardware when it comes to buttons, battery doors, and UMD drives. |

It is most definitely possible to repair it yourself, and it's probably the cheapest option. However, you should only attempt it at home if you don't have a warranty and you feel comfortable opening your PSP.
PSP 1000's have the most durable hardware because they were before Sony was concerned with the PSP being lightweight. |
