I was playing Modern warfare 3 and suddenly my ps3 turned off by itself and the red light was flashing. This happened with modern warfare 2 also. It never happended with another game.

Oh your PS3 crashed. Don't worry, it happens (FNV does that to me quite abit)

i experienced some freezes and shut downs with games mostly with BFBC2 when the system restarts then if the game wants i send a bug report and thats all this is nothing too serious (okay if its in every 5 minutes or very often happens you might start to worry) just ensure your system gets enough air and all the vents are 30cm away from any objects (minimum)

could be a sign of your ps3 getting the YLOD. my ps3 froze alot before it got it.

Deleted the install data. When you put it back in, it will download the patch and re-install. I had the problem with MW2, and this fixed it.
